I see John Barnes is still creating mayhem with defences, with his new position working for western power in Wednesbury Sandwell

Think in the present day we should stop using Barnes’ nickname tbh.

{Ed025's Note - why would that be agger?, all his team mates used to call him that and its a term of affection, dont get embroiled in this PC bullshit where you cant open your mouth without offending someone mate...its getting beyond a joke..

I think people are just misinformed about the origin of the nickname and assume it to be offensive. Pretty much everyone I’ve met with the surname Barnes has been known as Digger at some point. Check your US soaps of the early ‘80’s.

{Ed001's Note - exactly mate, he was named after the guy from Dallas. Though admittedly naming someone after a Texan in Liverpool could be considered offensive as Texan is an insult.}

Weren’t Hicks and (or) Gillett Texan? If they were, then perhaps being Texan is offensive after all! 😂.

{Ed0333's Note - I just got back from Texas. Wow they have big food portions out there.

Blimey! I'll monitor my footballer nickname power line erector jokes from now on. I'd been saving that one up as well.

Everything’s bigger in Texas, they say. Including arterial clots!

{Ed0333's Note - I ordered a porterhouse steak and I’m not joking I thought they bought the whole cow. I had to finish it because my Mrs would have thought I was a pussy, it wasn’t even that tasty!

Love it ed333. A real man rolls home from the steakhouse, dripping with the meat sweats 😂.

Not to challenge Ed's on where the digger nickname came from, I actually recall a John Barnes interview when the Dallas Character came up and Barnes said it was nothing to do with Dallas, more to do with his full name being John Charles Bryan Barnes. JCB which is a name for a Digger in the building industry. So that's why he was called Digger.

{Ed001's Note - you are right, I had forgotten that. I apologise, I made an error. I misremembered him as saying it was Digger after the Dallas character rather than the JCB thing, but I checked and your memory is much better than mine.}

No problem Ed. I use to think it was Dallas Character myself till I saw that interview. I thought I would let posters know the true origins of his nickname. And Ed no need to apologise mate.

{Ed001's Note - there is when I am wrong mate. The whole point is to give out correct info.}
