I didn't even think of the world cup, you make a great point, I hope we do. It'll be a total disaster if it goes through, filled with violence.

And move the Champions League final to Anfield.

{Ed001's Note - that is in the Ukraine, a totally different country from Russia. They are not even on particularly good terms.}

I'm not one for politicizing sporting events. cos if we really wanted to, we could draw a line across lots of countries where despicable acts have occurred. I mean the United States, the supposed good guys, have invaded nations for decades under flimsy evidence and questionable motives.
Leave it out, unless there is an imminent risk of harm then ok different story.

If we truly cared about humanity, we would urgently put right the below 6 things which are much easier to resolve than Syria:
1. World hunger
2. Child and slave labour
3. Sale of arms and diplomatic support to murderous regimes (Saudi, Israel, Iran, UAE, Egypt etc. )
4. Drone strikes on civlians
5. Proliferation of drugs
6. Threat to environment

While we ignore the above, addressing chemical weapons in Syria is tantamount to claiming that people have a preference to die from hunger, fire and shrapnel (bombs), and other regional violence over suffocation and skin burn. It's ludicrous.

Russia is a monstrous regime, but the point is, all this talk about world cups and political pressure involves assumption of a higher moral ground when there is none.

I over exaggerated a little. Drugs and child labour are not easy to resolve because they are caused by a complex interaction of factors involving the capitalist private sector and global economic and political realities. But the other 4 can be unilaterally solved by western governments.

Spot on Faithinworks. If my memory of History class is correct, I'm pretty sure the Nazi's hosted the Olympics in the 30's without any major issues! Sport should be the one thing that transcends all conflict and brings the world together.
