Hi Ed 1 I'm just wondering what your opinion of Ronnie Whelan was? He was just before my time to fully appreciate him but my Dad much preferred him to Jan Molby (we are Irish though) thanks to you and all the Eds for all the info on the site.

{Ed001's Note - I was only really a kid when he played for us, so I loved him because he always seemed to score important goals. I don't really remember much else of him other than that. I used to cut out anything Liverpool related from magazines like Shoot to stick up on my bedroom wall and there were quite a few of Ronnie, such as against Spurs in a cup final when he got a brace, iirc.}

Cheers Ed. He scored a few important goals for Ireland too. He seemed to have a bit of everything to him.

{Ed001's Note - I always remember him being a grafter as well. Reliable is the word that comes to mind, you could rely on him putting in a decent performance.}

Ronnie Whelan would tackle his own grandmother if he had to for the team. One of the best midfielder's ever for the club.

Cheers Eds1 re I was just a kid. That makes me feel really old. Always thought you were at least 75 years old.

{Ed001's Note - that's Ed025 you are thinking of. Though you missed off a digit.}

Whelan - a legit. great player for club and country.

Also a very nice man, who while he was quite softly spoken, could put in a few proper rough tackles at times when required.

Scored an amazing OG vs United at Old Trafford too in 1989 or 1990 I think it was, (must have been a dream come through as I believe he supported them as a kid), luckily Digger Barnes scored twice if memory serves and we won 2-1.

OIrish, it was 90 and was a fantastic lob over Grobelaar from about 25 yards.
We were 2-0 up at the time so I think he did it on purpose just to give UTD some false hope.

Missed out a digit? You mean he's 175 years old, or 750?

One of my favourite players Whelan was, had the pleasure of playing alongside him in a charity match years ago and he was fantastic on and off the pitch.

{Ed025's Note - i thought he was very good MD but remember he got a lot of stick from the fans mate..

I have his testimonial shirt framed on my wall I won, I was a kid of about 9 when I won it. He made me put it on there and then, it was massive on me. He posed for loads of pictures with me and was really happy to answer any questions I had. there were a lot. I also remember him drinking wine out of a pint glass. Seemed a lovely bloke happy to be around the fans, as was Steve Nicol who was with him.

Great player for Liverpool. He was a first team player in an era when we had some really fantastic players.
Consistent, a grafter, could play anywhere.
Every team needs those types of players. 🤝.
