Hi Ed001. This isn't football related, but I read one of your replies underneath about charity work being written into players contracts. If this is not something you all want to discuss, no hard feelings!

Keep in mind I agree it would have many positive aspects to it. I don't think it would ever happen, as it may keep some players from choosing us over other clubs or some nonsense.

I think all "service" is good service. The club wants good people representing its institution. That makes sense. But, doesn't making people volunteer/ serve kind of eliminate the ability to judge if they're good people? Shouldn't they want to serve of their own volition? This is becoming more of a mandatory thing across all professions and it makes me wonder if it isn't counter productive. Serving others always feels better when it isn't mandatory.

{Ed001's Note - I do get your point, but wouldn't the fact that a player would choose a different club because of it tell us a lot about them?}

That's very true. I mean I think the benefits of making it mandatory far outweigh the negatives. But still. its something they want prospective physicians to do because they "care" about their community. Yet. they are forced to do it. So how can we tell?

It should be an opt out system and completely transparent.
Not mandatory, but if a player is not prepared to give up say 1% of their wage to charity then they should be named and shamed.

There seems to be a general failure here to understand that the voluntary work is not to do with the individual players but the responsibility of the club towards the local community and wider good causes. It cements the institution within the community and gives players a tighter bond with the community they represent when they are on the field. I've done several projects with two clubs (one Premiership the other in the National League) and I've never seen a player complain about this aspect of their work. far from it, I've only seen them love this part of their job.
