Interesting analysis by Danny Murphy on MOTD2 suggesting Karius was out of position when the shot came in. I'd be inclined to agree with him.

{Ed0333's Note - The friggin irony...Danny Murphy was out of position for most of his playing career.

The first was an excellent finish after a slip up from TAA to let Rashford in behind, and then to let cut inside - stuff happens and he’ll learn. The second Mata shouldn’t have had a clean run through the middle hence why Karius was coming off his line, then scrambling across later.

Both goals were because we lost the first contact on a long ball, and because we didn’t track the movement in behind to pick up the flick on.

It’s a lesson but neither were Karius’s fault, and while Lovren lost the flick on, sometimes that happens in a game and we should have been better prepared for that to happen. I also think we could have double teamed Lukaku better using Can a bit deeper on those long balls. Would have made his life a lot harder.

End of the day, our main two priorities are still the CL and getting top 4. It hurts badly, but losing to Man Utd away is not the end of the world, and despite playing below par could easily have been a draw away from home if any one of 2-3 penalty calls had gone our way. The Mane tackle and the handball were clear for me, he had plenty of time to remove his hand with Mane steaming through the middle on Robbos cross.

Not sure why we have to find scape goats for every goal and/ or loss, and Lovren/ TAA/ Karius have been very good the last few matches. Let’s move on.

Blaming Karius and Lovren for goals is just not right guys. both goals are product of a lot of mistakes from a lot of players not just Lovren, Karius, and young TAA. Our defence has improved massivly over past month and they need to grow together. You can't blame Lovren for losing areal chalenge 35metars from our goal with Lukaku. player can't win every duel Lovren is very solid lately and his positioning and passing improved. he will grow with VVD.

Cheers Ron and agree Mandzo, it was how we dealt with it as a collective that made the chances. Lovren, TAA, VVD, and perhaps even Can were all arguably partially at fault.

It does seem a bit rich all this criticism for losing to United at their own place. We probably deserve more criticism for failing to break them down at Anfield.

as we have progressed under Klopp, and as we cast certain demons aside, there is always going to be a risk that some of our bad habits rear their ugly head from time to time. of note from the weekend for me were

- lack of communication between defenders
- lack of on-field leadership to react to certain situations
- back line out of sync of each other
- midfielder and defensive line out of sync and not supporting each other

these are things that we've managed to do much better of recent weeks and then boom the weekend happened. We operate well when things are working well (no surprises there right!? ), but the ongoing challenge is being able to do the right things and keep good habits when under pressure. The weekend was a snapshot example of some development we still need to make in that area. I have every faith that we will do better most of the time, anbd just hope that we can reach that level of consistency to the point where it becomes so rare that when it does happen it is a surprise!

also my other thought about the above is that in the past when we've left gaps in midfield and our CBs, that from that point on everyone is scrambling. Haven't seen that in us for a few weeks but it was all there in 2 moments vs manU. find it hard to blame anyone after the fact and really think that the focus should be at the origin of the play, cos its from that point it becomes scrambled eggs. karius is the last man in that process, so there is a lot for him to save! have ya ever cracked an eggs and the tried to catch all the contents of it without letting any hit the floor? ye tough ask aye!? so you know, crack the damn egg over the pan instead! that's my analogy anyways!

Too many people over-reacting to the weekend game. We played fairly badly and could have easily come out of that game with a draw or a win against the current second place team. I have faith that the lads will overcome the little blip.

Not sure people are blaming Karius for the goals and I certainly aren't I am just saying that a better goalkeeper might have saved it and kept us in the game. Karius couldn't because he isn't good enough. He might become good enough as he becomes older but the rest of the personal will change by then.
